Intensity noise reduction in a multiwavelength distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser.

Noise reduction in a multiwavelength distributed Bragg reflector fiber laser was demonstrated. A 20 dB reduction of in-phase intensity noise was achieved by using negative feedback to modulate the drive current of the laser pump diode. Strategies for reducing antiphase noise components are discussed.

Dual polarization fiber grating laser hydrophone.

A novel fiber optic hydrophone based on the integration of a dual polarization fiber grating laser and an elastic diaphragm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The diaphragm transforms the acoustic pressure into transversal force acting on the laser cavity which changes the fiber birefringence and therefore the beat frequency between the two polarization lines. The proposed hydrophone ...

Nonlinear coupling of relative intensity noise from pump to a fiber ring laser mode-locked with carbon nanotubes.

Pump relative intensity noise (RIN) has been recognized as a major source of noise in mode-locked lasers. The coupling of RIN from the pump to the output of a passively mode-locked fiber laser (PMFL) is systematically investigated using a pump modulation technique. It is found that the linear RIN coupling ratio from pump to PMFL is decreased with an increase in modulation frequency and is indep...

Composite Cavity Fiber Laser with Asymmetric Output Intensity and Wavelength

The composite cavity fiber laser (CCFL) is relatively simple in its fabrication, as it is essentially three wavelength matched Bragg gratings in a section of doped fiber. By using internal feedback with unequal sub-cavity lengths, unidirectional CCFLs with significantly asymmetric output power from its two outputs can be achieved. Preliminary results also show that it is possible for the lasing...

Laser phase noise to intensity noise conversion by lowest-order group-velocity dispersion in optical fiber: exact theory.

An exact result for the spectral density of intensity variations that occur after propagation of ergodic light in a medium having lowest-order-only group-velocity dispersion is obtained and applied to the problem of semiconductor laser phase noise to intensity noise conversion in a single-mode optical fiber. It is shown that the intensity spectrum after propagation formally approaches, for a la...
